The Black Hawk The Spymaster Series Joanna Bourne Books
As another reviewer stated, it's time Joanna Bourne was moved up to the ranks of "serious" authors. Her writing style is sophisticated, unique and addictive. Her characters are complex, interesting and unforgettable. Her plot structure and development far above much of what is out there. She could easily be another in the league of Diana Gabaldon, with this Spymaster Series. Please keep these wonderful stories coming!
The Black Hawk is my favorite so far in this series. There is nothing superficial about the characters in the Spymaster stories, but this one has the greatest depth. She does not tell you every little thing you "should" be feeling but gives you enough information that you arrive there on your own. The scene in the book with Adrian and Justine in the rain is one of the most beautifully written, sensual and emotional scenes I have had the pleasure to read.
Her characters are people I hope to read more about in books to come. These are books that you can look forward to re-reading, unlike so many others that you forget as soon as you have finished them.

The Black Hawk The Spymaster Series Joanna Bourne Books Reviews
What is it, precisely, that distinguishes a good book from a perfectly wonderful book? It can't be strictly plotline, since some of the most intriguing-sounding plots have translated into simply dreadful stories. Nor can it be dialogue; since witty lines hardly comprise a strong enough structure to support an entire book. Even characterization cannot carry a book into greatness, since many reviews reflect an author has done a credible job with creating characters, yet the book is lacking life.
Whatever that combination of plot, dialogue and characterization is that elevates a book to 5 star status, Joanna Bourne has certainly discovered it. This book is stunning!!!! Every sentence is a finely crafted work of art. The pages vibrate with emotions, the characters step from the pages to grab your attention and the descriptions make scene after scene come alive.
This book was a sheer delight from beginning to end. Usually I speed through a book, loving the experience and not wanting to put it down. Not so with this one, since I simply couldn't bear to come to the end. With great deliberation I paced my reading so as to prolong the pleasure of being in the company of Justine and `Awker.
I loved the abrupt transitions from present to past and back again - it extended my suspense and anticipation that much longer. I loved how this author crafted their stories to be parallel, yet opposite. Justine was wrenched from her aristocratic roots to descend to the absolute dregs of society, while Hawker grows from the squalor of poverty to the ranks of England's finest. Neither precisely fits their circumstances, but both fit together like the best of puzzle pieces.
I loved Justine's `Awker - and how he loved Justine. Sigh...Hawker was a luscious proportion of perfection and flaw. A true hero. Competent, wise, resourceful, dependable, witty, compassionate, passionate, yet vulnerable to Justine. The delicate dance between Justine and Hawker was breathtaking to watch - never sure if they were friend or foe, but always secure in the knowledge they were lovers. And in love, despite circumstances.
Quite simply, the novel enchanted me. The quality of writing is exceptional, the story line riveting and the book nearly perfect. If this isn't a 5-star book, I don't know what is. I am in awe of this author's incredible talent. I am equally amazed that a few daring reviewers indicated boredom or were otherwise critical. I truly don't understand what they might be looking for in a book....My advice is to buy the book and enjoy every page. I know I did - and the very best thing is that this book is one you don't simply forget, you continue to savor, long after you've read the last lovely word.
Enjoy!!!!!!
This is a good entry in the Spymasters series, but I could not recommend it as a stand-alone. While everything you need to follow the story is there, it works much better if you are already familiar with (and fond of) the main characters. The story is framed by events in 1818, but much of it is told in flashbacks to 1794, 1797 and 1802. Some readers may find the narrative structure off-putting, but I found it interesting. This is both an enemies-to-lovers story and a second-chance romance. The suspense plot involves political intrigue and murder with roots beginning in 1794 and ending in 1818. I found the romance to be very moving. Justine is a fascinating heroine. I found her even more compelling than the other strong heroines in the Spymaster series. Hawker is my favorite hero. In fact, he was my favorite character in the other books, where he was a secondary character. It was satisfying to see him finally get his happily-ever-after.
Each book I read by Joanna Bourne immediately becomes my favorite, and The Black Hawk was no exception. I love, love, LOVE Adrian (Hawker), and the way Ms. Bourne spinned out his story over so many years with Justine was absolutely perfect. Each episode in their 20+ year story came vividly to life, and each time the scene shifted I was disappointed for just a moment and then immediately caught up in the new perspective. As always, the intensity and depth with which Ms. Bourne writes her scenes was amazing in one scene in the Louvre, I could almost close my eyes and picture First Consul Bonaparte, for a change portrayed in fiction as a multifaceted character in his own right, and not just the bully of Europe. How sad that there are as yet so few books in Ms. Bourne's collection I wish her a very, very long and busy writing career still to come!
I’ve been dying to read The Black Hawk since I first started reading The Spymaster’s Series. The hero, Adrian Hawkhurst aka the Hawk is a significant character in Book 1 through 3, where his sense of humor and gallantry did not continue into Book 4. He comes across bland. Maybe my anticipation was too high therefore the book did not live up to my expectations. My biggest complaint is intermingling the present time when the heroine Justine aka the Owl, was stabbed on her way to see Hawk. Then the couples present and past history jumped around too much. All the books thus far are not in chronological order, followed by a book that jumps around leaving my brain befuddled. I wonder if the author is keeping an accurate time line. Second complaint is how the following book is being advertised by the focus on the spy Pax and getting in his backstory. Third complaint is no back up story on Hawks early life under Lazarus is ever filled in.
