Three Novels of World War II The Rising Tide The Steel Wave No Less Than Victory eBook Jeff Shaara
I have only recently discovered Jeff Shaara. I have read nearly every book on the subject of D Day etc but I loved these books. Not only do they give the reader a good account of the factual history of the campaigns they take the reader into the headquarters, fox holes and barracks of the participants. Shaara does a wonderful job of his interpretations of what the conversations must have been like between Patton and Eisenhower, Rommel and Hitler and basic soldier to basic soldier. I was enthralled with his interpretation and I believe it could have been word for word as to what actually took place. The way he imbedded fictitious soldiers into the story and their trials and tribulations was excellent. We all know that a lot of planning went into these operations but the conversations and the mechanics of the planning was very real. As an Australian I was also very impressed that Shaara was able to make a distinction between the Australian Army and the British Army and its contribution to the war in North Africa against Rommel and the Italians. I am now looking forward to reading the Pacific War series and I eagerly await the Korean War series. Well done Jeff. Three Novels of World War II The Rising Tide The Steel Wave No Less Than Victory eBook Jeff Shaara Reviews
In his "To the Reader" section of his books, Jeff Shaara claims that his books are historical fiction. Do not let this deter you if you're looking for historical accuracy. Mr. Shaara's novels are exhaustively researched and fun to read. The only fiction in these books is the dialogue. Everything else (the battles, the people, the events) actually existed. If you're a WWII buff or a lover of historical novels, the WWII trilogy is a must-have!
Excellent read but sixty hours is a long time to spend completing it. Though it covers the war from start to finish, many important battles are glossed over. Still I would read it again. Lots of stuff about the brass and the agony experienced by the common infantry man.
I like the parts about George Patton and the Battle of the Bulge. The discovery of the concentration camps was very moving.
Fictionalized history, as written here, can give fact dimension that proves familiar to each reader; that characters, above or below one's station in life, are recognizable and even familiar to the reader.
We all have studied the main facts of the second world war, now clouded in time by the uncertainties of more recent conflicts, but our points of view may differ on certain events. The author does not seem to pass judgment on the players, but presents each in a manner that allows the continued admiration for men like George Patton or Erwin Rommel, despite their shortcomings, or playing for the "other" team.
Jeff Shaara is unpretentious in his presentation, clear in illustrating the complexities of planning and execution, and detailed enough to whet the appetites of each reader for further study of that conflict and its major players.
I have read all of Jeffs as well as his fathers books - they all are great works and I strongly recommend them to anyone who wants to learn some history in an easy format. The facts are accurate; however, he adds to it by personalizing history - either with true people of history or made up characters, he presents a point of view that is very enjoyable to read.
I find that I simply cannot put the books down and I have had many sleepy work days because I stayed up late.
I have a whole set of the books in Hardbound 1st editions and I like his writing so much - I went ahead and bough all the books for the (easier to carry around).
I finished reading Rick Atkinson's WWII trilogy immediately before starting Jeff Shaara's three novels. I am something of an amateur WWII history buff so this was "red meat" for me. Rick Atkinson's thoroughly researched history is incredibly easy to read despite the fact that it is indeed a complete chronological text of the covered period. With that background, picking up Shaara's novels is like being treated to an incredible dessert after a wonderful meal. Some historians may argue that the historical characterizations of significant figures are inaccurate but they are indeed fully developed and that is one of the most attractive elements of Shaara's incredibly appealing style.
Undeniably among the best historical fiction written, Jeff Shaara's books absolutely compel a reader to continue. I often feel somewhat lost after completely his books--I'm so deeply involved in the characters and events, I'm almost literally unable to stop (seriously reading after everyone else is asleep!)
The hook that Jeff Shaara uses so effectively is to finish each book with a summary of the main characters' lives (at least, those who are living at the end since the main characters' story lines are anything but predictable)--the 'everyday' characters are so relatable, and the historical figures are accurately portrayed, but incredibly human. Particular to this packaging, having the three books together lets a reader plow through the story without interruption, so I would recommend this 'configuration.'
Thank goodness there are so many Jeff Shaara books; I honestly don't know what I will do when I've read them all.
I was shocked to read of the casualties of the common infantry foot soldiers and the paratroopers and the managemrnt of the campaigns and the mistakes in coordination of air , naval, artillery support at the highest and even midldle level of our allied coordination plus the up cropping lealosies beteeen our allies, I also finished Atkinson's book on the other concurrent NORTH AFRICAN AND ITALIAN LANDINGS THAT PRECEEDED THE nORMANDY iNVASIONS AND THE CONSISTENT RESISTANCE OF THE GERMAN FORTIFICATIONS WHEN WE THOUGHT WE WERE CLOSING OUT THE WAR.WHICH STILL NEAR ITS END CAUSED MASSIVE MILLIONS OF DEATH TO OUR ENEMYS AND OUR OWN VALIENT TROOPS. also-- WAGING WAR IS A EXEMPLIFICATION OF A CRUEL SOCIAL CLASS SYSTEM THE COMMON SOLDIER CARRIES THE LARGEST BURDEN OF DEATH IN THE OFFENSIVES AND IN THE DEFENSE PROCESSES -- WHICH IS THE CITIZEN SOLDIER, OFTEN REFERRED TO AS THE "GRUNTS " , UNFORTUANATELY.
