Excellent! Jake & Isabelle. What a Wonderful story, I enjoyed every minute of it! Fast paced, never a dull moment, a romance brought to life and well developed. I love this author's style of writing. This story demonstrates that love can form in many ways. The emotions are deeply felt. Jake is a rancher who has cattle but nothing else, no hands to help him, no money. Isabelle shows up with eight orphan boys she's bringing for farmers to adopt. Then she finds out from Jake that these farmers don't want sons, they want slaves they can work to death and horribly mistreat. Jake is forming a picture in his mind of having the boys help him move his herd into New Mexico to sell. Isabelle won't let them go without her. Lots of action, they begin to depend on each other as family. Love these boys have never known.Tags : Ward (The Cowboys) [Leigh Greenwood] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. I have read all of Leigh green woods books . This is my favourite of all of them . Good old fashioned western love story. With all the old fashioned values . If you love this book then try seven brides- beginning with Rose. Just wish their where more cowboys in the world like these.
This story never grows old. I've read and re-read the cowboys many times. The west was carved by men and women with grit. Both Jake and Isabella are cut from the same cloth. Honest. Hard working. And love the same.
I never got bored once. This book had enough action to keep from wanting to put it down. I liked all the different personalities of the boys. Each one pulled at my heart as if I knew them personally. I really appreciate the history lesson and the reality of the hard life after the war. It seemed as the whole country was trying to start over and find what was left of their lives. Jake had integrity and that's what I liked most about him. Isabelle had to learn to adjust to a whole new way of life, yet it was hard for her to admit when she was wrong. The trials everyone goes through on the cattle drive brings out the best in them and a loyalty thicker than blood.
My dad loved this book. I purchased it with others as a gift for him to read as he loved the stories and era that they were all written in. He recently passed away, but before he passed, he often told me how excited he was about these stories and the gift I had given him. Thank you Leigh Greenwood for making my father's last days memorable to him and to me.
Ive read these and have owned them in paperback, i thought it was time to read them again and own them on .
Jake has always been my favorite of all of the guys in this series.
I was really taken in with the concept of this book.... a group of orphans heading across rugged land, looking for their last chance to find a home. The boys are complex, different characters, each with their own back story that I would like to read more of. I liked Jake, our Hero. He's a little rough around the edges, coming back to his ranch after fighting in the Civil War to find that neighboring farmers are working to take his land away. But Isabelle! My word! I have never read a book where I have disliked a character so much. I spent the first 3/4 of the book wishing and hoping that the evil-doers would kill her off, so that Jake and the boys could move on. She was harping, nagging, self important, critical, and down right stupid about some things. She constantly put herself and others in danger and was never called on it. To me, the romance between she and Jake was contrived and never felt real. Why? Who would love such a selfish, rude, narcissistic girl? This was my first Leigh Greenwood book, but I'm trying again with the book "Buck". Hopefully I can at least cheer for the main characters in that book.
This is the second time I've read this book and it won't be the last time. A year has past since I read it last. Just as every house needs a good foundation so does a good series. You will find everything in his story, ranch life cattle drives greedy, abusive neighbors, twelve orphans nobody wanted until Jake came along and needed hands to help him drive his cattle to market to an Army for near Santa Fe. Isabelle who is in charge of the orphans has to come along if Jake takes them. Will Isabelle a woman raised as a lady in Savannah and Jake a rough and no always good smelling but gorgeous rancher manage not to kill each other on this long and arduous cattle drive? Will they manage to overcome their differences and find love? It is an exciting read and you will find out.
